The Dashain Festival

 Hindus observe many festivals. Among them, Dashain is the greatest festival. It is usually observed in the month of September. That is, it falls in the month of Aswin or kartik according to Nepali calendar. It is observed for ten days.
 Dashain is a festival which is celebrated as a victory of good over evil. This festival encourages us to follow the right path. It is a festival to commemorate Ram's victory over Ravana. 


Dashain starts with "Ghatasthapana". This is the first day of Dashain. Since Ghatasthapana, Goddess Durga is worshiped for nine days  and nights. That's why, this period is called "Navaratri".
Out of nine days the last four days Saptami,  Durgastami, and vijayadashami are important. the seventh day of dashain is called the Saptami or Fulpati . The eighth and ninth days are called Maha asthami and Mahanawami respectively. on these days, goats, buffaloes, hen, ducks, sheep etc. are sacrificed in every homes and Durga (Shakti) 
temples.





More over, during Maharatri period, people indulge in merry making and feasting. All the villages, towns and cities have festive look. People clean their houses and put on new clothes. Children wear new clothes and eat festive dishes. Many people eat meat. People kill birds and animals. People take rest from work and enjoy the festival. School, campuses, offices and other business  concerns remained closed.

 The tenth day is the  most important day of Dashain. On this day, people wear new clothes and seek blessings from their superiors. People put tika on their foreheads and use jamara on their heads and bless them. People also feed their near and dear ones. 
Dashain is a  time of happiness. All the classes of people whether they are rich or poor observe this festival all people celebrate this festival with great joy.
